As we were planning to go for our gown fitting on the last day of the lunar 6th month, we got some questions on when are we going for our photoshoot and advice that maybe we should not go for that in the 7th lunar month. In fact, it seems that we have to shun all wedding related preparations during that period of time.

Went to run a check on the Internet and this is what The Wife  gotten:

In the month of August (that’s the seventh month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar)  the Chinese believe, that the gates of hell will open.
The dead souls (the Hungry Ghosts) will be released and roam the streets of the living in this month. Children and young toddlers should be kept from going out of the house, because the “Hungry Ghosts” could lure them to the kingdom of the dead.

Having a wedding or moving to another house during this period is considered as bad luck and should never be practiced.
And God forbid that one should die during  this month!

HUH! How can control when will die??? (look at last sentence) Hmmm, well… both The Husband and I are not very superstitious.. but do not be mistaken, we do respect traditional beliefs and in the 7th month festival itself. That said, we are not going to start on a paranoid streak of avoiding things at all cost… And I always believe that we should fully utilise time when we have them.

Understood the part that sending out invitations during this time is a big boo boo as the elderly relatives and parents might not be happy. Also, it seems that sending out invites at this time is equivalent to inviting ‘good brothers’ to the wedding…. Therefore major preparations such as sending out invites, ROM, food tasting, guo da li and the banquet CANNOT be held.

Hmmm, so we are planning to go for gown fitting before the 7th month and then try to have the photoshoot on a GOOD day in the month itself. Yes, do believe that there are still good days regardless of the month. That way, we can avoid the crowd during the 8th month and the bad weather at the end of the year. Also a good way to kill time for “jobless” and therefore less stressed out and hopefully prettier me. The Husband can also start to use his leave too!

I guess the only precaution that we have to take for a shoot during this month is to skip Denga Bay for photos after sunset as well as the pretty waterfall at Kota Tinggi in case we capture any uninvited others along with us… Heehee… I hope readers of this entry don’t get spooked out… The Wife have had a group photo with such an uninvited guest too, but I guess I am not very freaked. Always believe that since I did not do them harm, they will probably not harm me as well.

As for the house, renovation will start this month and end somewhere in the beginning of the 7th lunar month. Earlier, The Husband has gotten the furniture companies to deliver on one of his off day which is around that period as well. So I guess thereafter we just do not move any of our stuff in and therefore does not constitute to moving house! Hahaha…. our own justifications… And we have the amulet on the door that my father-in-law got for us, so we will be safe and sound!

The wedding preparation continues for now…

Finally, after the collection of our keys on 16 Jun, we can finally do our door opening today. It was a lot of excitement with the ROM then the house. Nevertheless, we are finally proud owners of our very own love nest.

Some photos that were taken at the point of our viewing:

Corner of the living room

The very blue kitchen

The master bedroom

Bathroom in Master Bed Room

Study Room

Then the headache start on whether to renovate and to what extent to renovate, cos everything boils back down to the dollars and cents. It will be a problem to solve for another day and in the meantime we are still relishing at our new found statuses of being Mr and Mrs!

With the deposit and HLE already in, the flat would only be ready after May… feeling quite lerthagic already and decide to continue with the shopping spree to doll up the flat instead of just hanging around and wait.

In addition to the previous loot, we continued with our nest building activity… The list of loot continues:

– From Novena Furnishings: A bedroom set, a coffee table and an easy chair… The Husband managed to convince the store manager to sell us the easy chair for S$50! The Husband will fare well in BKK. SHall bring him the next time…

*Wait a minute. Is that store name out to confuse people?? The logo and colour combinations are exactly the same for Novena Furnishing and Nova Furniture!*

– In anticipation of the BenQ projector we got last month at the IT show, perhaps I should get a popcorn machine with my I-Weekly subscription. Say HALLO to cinematic effects! But in the end, I chose a slow cooker and a food processor instead. More useful.

We got a couple of practical storage items from Howard’s Storage World at Harbourfront Centre. Now we have a red plastic desktop that is very useful for putting the oven hot laptop while watching TV or doing work or surfing net in bed. hahha.. good for lazy peeps… can even have breakfast in bed!

For all The Wife’s  little knick knacks such as necklaces and watches, we got a hanging organizer that came with little pockets…

Look, its damn cool rite? Double-sided somemore and can be hung in the wardobe. Now I can say goodbye to tangled necklaces and lost rings!

The hole in the pocket continues to burn bigger!

With the house in mind, we started buying some key essentials for the house and woah, even though it was fruitful, I am starting to think that it will be madness trying to wait for furniture delivery from the different places…

What we have bought up to this point in time…

Nova Furnishing

  • Memory foam mattress with free gift of 2 memory pillows (S$1,399)
  • Shoe cabinet with stool (S$499)

The mattress is like such a bargain given the S$700 of its usual price due to the store’s grand opening offer. The shoe cabinet, it was love at first sight… considering that I didn’t have the same feeling with The Husband when I first met him.

The Furniture Warehouse

  • Leather sofa bed that can double up as a huge bench (S$499)
  • A pair of cute orange cushions (S$20)

Ngee Ann City Homeware Sale

  • Zojirushi Rice Cooker (S$100)
  • Zojirushi Handy Pot (S$20)

They are so cheap considering that they are from the Japanese ‘elephant’ brand which usually cost a bomb. The mini rice cooker is so cute… good for just 2-3 persons.

IKEA

  • A pair of LACK bedside lamps (S$40)

Wondering what’s with the odd name but we have loved this design since we saw it a few months back but each was going for about S$50. Now that the green ones, and not sure why only the green ones are on offer, we took the opportunity to snatch a pair! I love green….

2009 IT Fair

  • BenQ projector + free screen (S$568)
  • Epson Stylus Printer (S$98)

My Husband is a himbo! He love it and put gains from his shares into this one. Well, at least we can have a home cinema. It will probably be good to watch HORROR movies with. Will get another TV later. The printer is a good buy and print great pictures too!

At the end of the day, when we look at the piling receipts, we want to shout in unison that  GETTING MARRIED  IS SO EXPENSIVE!

Lesson of the day:

Buying furniture = big hole in the pocket

Building a home = priceless

The Husband and I went to HDB today for our first appointment. Finally, we are going to be owners of a flat!! 😀

It is okay even if it is not a new and its a tiny one because it is our very first home. Will definitely be updating more about our journey to moving in.

Have been rather busy recently, starting out on my new job… my class are all made up of pretty nice kids… but the grading is mad…. Wedding planning is currently on hold…

It wasn’t easy for us to get around to start deciding on what we want to the final love nest that we finally got. The whole journey seems to be full of obstacles.

Because The Husband only proposed last October, we took another while of “realization” period before starting to look for a place. We first put in our names to ballot for Duxton and we are in the 2nd phase of bidding for completed flats in 2009. Our number came up to be 300 over the amount of flats that are available. Much as we are a bit disappointed, we moved on.

Our next ballot was for Dew Spring in Yishun which we thought we will have high chance given that our number of chances increase with the last failure and that we were very near our parents but alas, after 2 months of long wait, we came up nearly at the end of the queue!

Just as we were wondering how that could be, a letter came through that we might be able to choose Duxton depending on the takeup rate. The Husband loved the area deeply for its wonderful proximity to town. But I was quite worried about the amount we have to pay for it for  the next 30 years.

As the number of flats keep falling over the next week, the Chinese quota also reduced substantially. At the same time, the ideal floors were taken up fast leaving us with low floors. I started to take initiative to look for something nearer our parents in terms of resale.

The weekend before our appointment, we saw something that I really like in terms of floor, condition (except for the blue kitchen and toilets) and The Husband decide to give up Duxton for me. It was quite lucky that eventually Duxton ran out just a day before our appointment that alleviate the disappointment a bit.

Then came another letter that tells us we can walk in selection for Dew Spring, depending on the take up rate of the flats! We were a bit exasperated and wonder if we can take another round of wait and torture if we did not get a resale flat.

Instead of torturing us like this, instead what should be done is probably for the number of applicants = number of left over units to be called up first. If the selection by the last 75% take up rate is low, then get in the next batch rather than to send to everyone and all got to go through a hair tearing and nail biting week or two monitoring the situation. It is just too painful!

Either way, we eventually decide to just go for the resale place we saw and now waiting for the formalities to be done.
